Meet the Coach

Michael Lavigne has been an Endurance Running Coach for the past 15 years. He is an NCCP Performance Coach with Athletics Canada, Registered Coach with The Coaching Association of Canada, and is currently finishing his Advanced Coaching Diploma through the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario. Michael has been a Certified Personal Trainer for the past 15 years.

Michael was Team Canada’s Endurance Coach for the 2017 Pan Am U20 Track and Field Championships in Trujillo, Peru. The team won a record 22 medals, 10 of which were from the Endurance group, including four golds. 

He was also the Head Coach of the George Brown College Cross Country & Indoor Track Teams for 11 years, leading the teams to 10 straight CCAA National Collegiate Cross Country Championship appearances (2007-2016), 13 OCAA (Ontario) and 10 CCAA (Canadian) Cross Country medals. Additionally, Michael produced 24 All-Ontario, 9 All-Canadian (Top 14), and 30 All-Academic (GPA of 3.50 or higher) award winners. Between 2011-2013 Michael’s George Brown teams were the only College in Canada to have both male and female All-Canadians. 

For the 2017-18 season Michael was a Volunteer Assistant Coach with the Women’s Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Teams at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Michael worked under the Director of Track & Field / Cross Country, Julie Culley, who was also a finalist in the Women’s 5000m at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Michael has also coached High School Track & Field, leading the 2014 Bishop Strachan School team to their most productive season in 15 years. Four Athletes qualifying for the OFSAA (Ontario) Track & Field Championship. All four athletes finished in the Top 10, and one won a Bronze medal.

Michael has coached Team Ontario five times (2014, 2015, 2017 & 2019 Ontario vs Quebec Indoor Meet & 2018 Ontario Summer Games). He has also been an Athletics Ontario committee member, Chairing the Programs & Services committee from 2016 to present. Additionally, Michael is a 2019 & 2020 Brooks I.D. (Inspire Daily) Coach.

Michael Coaching Philosophy is to develop well rounded athletes that will achieve success in Athletics, but more importantly in life. He will lead the athletes he coaches to achieve their goals through the 4 pillars of success – mutual respect, dedication, commitment and enjoyment
